Traditional Wa‑Rousoku: A 130‑Year‑Old Candle Master’s Exclusive Weekly Experience
OverView
Nakamura Rousoku, a prestigious candle atelier in Fushimi, Kyoto, has been handcrafting authentic wa‑rousoku (traditional Japanese candles) since its founding in 1887. These artisanal candles, made from plant-derived waxes such as haze and rice bran, feature wicks constructed from tatami rush core wrapped in washi paper—ensuring a soft, flickering orange flame with minimal soot, distinct from petroleum-based Western candles.
These candles are still deeply woven into Japanese cultural life, illuminating settings like Buddhist temples, tea ceremonies, Noh and Kabuki performances, and other traditional events.
In this exclusive workshop, participants begin with an artisanal introduction: learning about plant-based ingredients, discovering the key distinctions from Western paraffin candles, and witnessing the once-weekly, highly traditional “wax-dipping” ritual—an opportunity reserved for discerning guests.
The hands-on journey continues with candle molding, vermilion coating, and finally, custom painting using acrylics—culminating in the creation of a one-of-a-kind wa‑rousoku masterpiece. Finished candles are presented in charming boxes to take home. This immersive experience allows you to connect intimately with the soothing glow and heritage of Japanese craftsmanship—an elegant moment of cultural immersion and serenity.
