Weaving the Gifts of Bamboo Forests: Authentic Bamboo Craft Experience with Kyoto’s Master Artisans
OverView
Bamboo craftsmanship is a traditional Japanese art form that has continued since the Jomon period, evolving into hundreds of intricate weaving patterns that embody both functionality and beauty. Among them, “Kyomeichiku,” bamboo harvested in Kyoto, is highly prized for its luster and strength, enhanced through a traditional oil-removal process called “hi-ire” (flame treatment). The meticulous handwork of skilled artisans further elevates its value.
Take Kobo Kisetsu is a contemporary bamboo atelier that integrates this long-standing tradition into modern lifestyles. The studio specializes in delicate and lightweight creations using traditional thin bamboo strips. The artisans have earned high acclaim both in Japan and internationally, known for their exceptional craftsmanship that brings out the natural “breath” of bamboo and creates soft, graceful shadows.
This experience offers an authentic opportunity to appreciate the fusion of tradition and innovation in Kyoto’s bamboo craftsmanship, allowing you to feel the beauty of the material with your own hands and enjoy the joy of creating your own refined bamboo piece.
