Experience the Craftsmanship Honored by the Pope – Kyoto Magic Mirror and Bronze Mirror Workshop

OverView

Yamamoto Metalworks, with over a century of history in Kyoto, is one of Japan’s leading metal craft ateliers, renowned for restoring culturally significant artifacts and producing bespoke pieces for both domestic and international clients. Among their most celebrated works is the Kirishitan Magic Mirror presented to Pope Francis—a masterpiece that beautifully blends Japanese tradition with spiritual symbolism. These mysterious mirrors, which reveal hidden patterns when reflected in light, have held a sacred place in Japanese faith and culture for centuries. Even today, their intricate craftsmanship is preserved by only a handful of skilled artisans.

In this exclusive experience, you will visit the normally private atelier, where master artisans will guide you through the traditional production process of magic mirrors and bronze mirrors. You will then enjoy a hands-on session, personally finishing a small bronze mirror. You’ll take home your own unique mirror, crafted by your own hand, as a memorable keepsake. This is a rare opportunity to experience the time-honored techniques associated with works created for the Pope himself, while immersing yourself in the depth of Japanese craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
