Authentic Wagasa Crafting Experience: Master Artisans Weaving Tradition Since the Late Edo Period
OverView
Founded in the late Edo period, Hiyoshiya is a distinguished Kyoto workshop that has preserved the tradition of Kyo Wagasa for over 160 years, spanning five generations. The Bangasa, or traditional Japanese umbrella, has long been used not only as protection from rain and for warding off evil but also as an essential element in cultural settings such as tea ceremonies, Noh theater, and Kabuki performances. It is deeply rooted in both the daily life and spiritual culture of Japan.
In this experience, you will first be introduced to the structure and craftsmanship of Kyo Wagasa, guided by skilled artisans who explain their dedication to using 100% natural materials, including bamboo ribs, washi paper, natural glue, and linseed oil. You will then enjoy a hands-on session, choosing your preferred paper, carefully applying it to the umbrella frame (known as “doh-bari”), and adding personalized touches such as calligraphy or family crests. This is a refined cultural experience where you can craft your own unique Bangasa—an elegant encounter with Japanese tradition that nourishes the soul.
