Kyo-Koma Traditional Top Making Experience

OverView

Step into the world's only Kyo-Koma workshop and discover a traditional craft that nearly disappeared from Kyoto forever.

Kyo-Koma — Kyoto's traditional spinning top — traces its origins to the Azuchi-Momoyama period (late 16th century), when noblewomen of the imperial court created decorative tops by wrapping kimono fabric around bamboo cores. Today, Jakkyu is the sole workshop in the world keeping this art alive, led by master craftsman Nakamura Yoshiyuki, who learned the craft from his father as a child.

In this hands-on experience, you'll visit the workshop and watch the craftsman demonstrate his skills up close, then create your very own Kyo-Koma. Choose 4 colors from 15 vibrant cotton threads and carefully wrap them tightly around a bamboo core — no tools required, just your hands and concentration. The finished top is shaped, balanced, and coated, then yours to take home as a one-of-a-kind lucky charm.

Kyo-Koma are cherished as good luck gifts, symbolizing wishes for things to "spin smoothly" in life, business, and fortune.
